So happy to find you here... writing and photographing Autumn closing in! You’ve painted the pictures in words too. I’m touched how your hill in France is so much like my Midwest town in the US. “Let’s have a culpa” makes me wonder if you’ve Aussie connection? I have lots of family in Oz. Thank you for subscribing...following you back! Can’t wait to feel winter through your prose and quotes and photos! 😊🥰🍁🍂
Thank you so much Joan, in fact, ‘let’s have a cuppa’ is a term used in Northern England also. I had rarely heard it until I moved north from Sussex in my early twenties but I found it such a cosy and warm phrase, it stuck! Here in France of course, most people really don’t drink tea at all so it doesn’t wholly apply since ‘a cuppa’ implies, to me anyway, a mug of something hot and steaming, not a tiny cup of luke warm black coffee...!
I read your heartfelt post about losing your husband with tears in my eyes, your words reminded me of my parents who were so in love too. They held hands wherever they went, my dad would never hesitate in telling and showing my beautiful mother how much he loved her. When she died suddenly at the horribly young age of 52 he was bereft, lost, he cried all the time, he lived for just another five years until cancer took him (to this day I’m sure the shock triggered the deadly disease) too on his 58th birthday, leaving us, his three girls feeling completely orphaned.
And now, I am older than either of them when they died and thoughts of how either my husband or I will cope when the other departs creep in... I try to block them but then I remember how shock can kill too. Keep living Joan, hold onto the memories in you heart but live life to the fullest every day. Join your clubs, embrace every day as if it were your last too, smile with your family, shed tears with them also, share his stories with your beautiful grandchildren and know he is there right beside you still. Your husband would want that, he will watch and guide you from his new place in another world with as much love as he ever had, perhaps more for knowing how brave and strong you are.
Oh wow, Susie...this has me in tears. Thank you for taking time to write so well about your parents, your fears. I’m sorry you and your sisters were left on your own so early in life. I try to follow your advice/all the right things/great support...but there are still. tough days now and then. I will keep going...he would want that I know. I pray he watches over our grandkids as they begin driving and dating. Because of our long life and love together...I have grown stronger and braver. Thank you for such caring words and understanding... gives me such a boost this morning as I read this! As for cuppa, I recall it from England visits also, but like you...we just say cuppa for tea, coffee or cocoa in our family! ☕️
“As it does every year and without a backward glance, the warmest of seasons has turned to our opposite side to chase away winter, to warm different trees and whole other countries.”
This is so beautiful to think about as I get ready to experience a proper winter for the first time again in 10 years - to think of all that is experiencing the warmth of the sun in it’s absence here. Thank you ☺️
Hugely belated thanks Kaitlyn... I hope you get to enjoy a real winter, with beautiful crisp frosty mornings to wander in, perhaps a few snowy days to marvel at blanketed silence too... safe travels from the sunny side of this beautiful planet.. 🧡🍂
Perfect duo of photos and words, enhancing our experience of Nature’s life cycle, the letting go and sacrifice of one season for the emergence of a new one. I understand your reluctance to welcome winter when Autumn’s hues are so warm and stunning. Love n light Dearest Susie ✨🌟✨
Hello sweetie, thank you always, apologies for the very late reply, I am still catching up after all the wifi problems! I am truly dreading winter this year, Im sure the older I get the colder I get, so far autumn colours are doing nothing to warm me either, as in they still don't seem to have arrived! I am waiting... not very patiently though8 love and light always xxxx
Your exquisite prose and photography just slowed time. Dog days to gray days to autumn stretched a five minute read into a reposed lifetime. Thank you.
Thank you Kimberly, I hope the repose continues through your weekend… the grey days continue here, day after dog day of torrential rain… I will have no choice but to search for inspiration in the puddles and torrents of water running down my hill… have a blessed weekend lovely lady.. x
This is gorgeous Susie 💛 I love how you've shared photographs in different ways - such artistry to accompany your glorious photography and beautiful words x
My Kindest Thanks Emily, I always wanted to own one of those beautiful websites we see from time to time, the ones that take you by the hand from the start and lead you through a fairytale of images and prose, but I could never quite get my old brain to understand all the jargon. Substack gave me that opportunity simply so I am so delighted you say that! Happy weekend lovely lady x
Bless you dear Lisha, thank you so much, it’s odd though, I am not the slightest bit romantic in life. Perhaps my words fill this gap..? Happy weekend lovely xx
Thank you, this is a horribly late reply Debs, I am terribly sorry, we have had wifi issues all week, I had to try out 'schedule post' for the first time here! which was rather nerve wracking ! x

You write so romantically.

If the love that I have in me is reserved only for my daughters and words, that is enough. Happy weekend.
Simply enchanting 🌟

I love walking around your hill with you Susie. Your imagery and words are such a balm.
Thank you from my heart Natalie, I hope the balm is working well on healing you sweet soul… 🙏🏽🍂
