I'm going to go heat another mug of apple cider, tighten the wrap of my oversized sweater, move to the porch, and look out at the pasture with its edges of trees, turning orange and red and yellow. I do this because I want to read THIS again. Your words. What you share about this season.
And because of this (to which I all too familiar) - "begin the war with stove!"
My husband mentioned cleaning the chimney today Stacy, as much as the idea repulses me, this year, I am not sure I will be able to keep up my no stove vigil, especially having already relented once!
We are already feeling the chill air of autumn pervading the walls and I fear this winter will feel very long, I will be in no mood for misunderstandings!
Thank you for reading Stacy, our trees are yet to turn here but I feel the change, we are close 🍂
yes the rain and wind is howling now - you are further south I reckon. It’ s been a glorious last few weeks.. Enjoy your transition to enforced chocolatines and slippers! There’ s joy there too 😘
lovely just lovely - I also enjoy the autumn light our region brings - golden and warm. We did however light our stove today - those old stone walls will resist nature’ s glow.
Thank you Alex, The light in autumn is perhaps the most enticing of all, I wish I had more time to capture it.🍂
And sadly, as predicted, I have lost the battle with my husband over ‘stove’, I returned last evening to a house toasty warm, smoke blowing from the chimney in white puffs... and the question, ‘when shall we order more logs..?’ Stay cosy.. it looks as though I will be joining you!
Great storytelling Susie, I loved reading this! ❤️
Being a January girl, I’m the one who loves Winter! 😂🤭 When you see the bone structure of the landscape and you know something waits beneath it. Autumn means, besides all the goodness of Autumn, Winter is coming, the season of recovery rejuvenation and preparation. Recovery of the loudness and crowdedness of Summer, the hurry to get things done in the early hours of the day before it’s too hot to even lift a finger!
Isn’t it wonderful that people can be so different and appreciate each other nonetheless?! 🧡xx
Johanna my lovely, I know well how you thrive and wait for the slower months - you write so beautifully of your love of winter I am going to copy your words and paste them on a note to my lap top screen - I am open to persuasion, especially when written from the heart as you have done. Thank you sweetie... enjoy the days that will surely follow... and I will try to join you. 🙏🏽xxxx
Aww, that’s so sweet of you! 🥰 I have to admit though that I borrowed some words Andrew Wyeth wrote on winter (about the bone structure of the landscape) because they speak to my heart. Sending love 🧡xx
I’m so happy to have found me way here. I love how you walk us right into your landscape, however frenzied and full, and allow us to feel the heavy turning of a season. I, too, feel the juggling anxiety (harvest, preparing, winterizing) of autumn but being a February baby, I also welcome the cocooned darkness.
Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings Kimberly, I do try to envelope myself in all that is dark and cosy, the grey of the winter months I try to imagine as soft mohair grey rather than dull slate… but invariably the clouds (slate colored of course!) descend and with them the melancholy.. perhaps this year will be different…? I pray hard..!
I have saved your post ‘Google, who am I’ I read about a third and was called away but I am enthralled by your mémoire… please bare with me I will be back..! Meanwhile - the weekend - and for us the last warm days… x
Thank you lovely Elske… I am still winning in the stove front although this weekend I fear the battle will be a tough one..! All is changing in the south wind this morning… today perhaps, no, almost certainly, will be the last warm day and I feel a great weight descending. Winter closer and closer…😔xx
Thanks so much for mentioning Home Comforts, Susie! You've really captured the busy juggle of autumn, especially the damn harvest and its never-ending demands :D
You’re very welcome Nadia, my apologies for this late reply. I was so relieved to find another soul who has those same melancholic feelings about Autumn - it seems we are a rarity..! 🍂
Thank you so much for taking the time to read Jenna, I am delighted you enjoyed my chaos! And that you mentioned stove who plays a star role in my writing through the winter months… I wish you a peaceful end to the week… 🍂x
As much as I love Autumn, like you I feel apprehensive and somewhat sad knowing that Winter will arrive with its cold temperatures and dark early evenings. As for Stove, it can most definitely wait. I’d postpone it’s sputtering and spewing for as long as possible. Meanwhile buy Mr. woolly Long-Johns.
Exactly, those long winter days seem to drag so slowly too. I'm still winning the stove battle but for how long is negligible now... this weekend, on the day of the new moon which doesn't bode well for my holidays, we are about to have a rather drastic drop in temperature and much needed rain. Summer will be nothing but a memory again... x
