You have chosen such deep work, surrogating your tiny owl friend... I'm quieted and humbled by such deliberate acts strung together, day after day to the completion of the task. I believe some refer to this sort of thing as magic, dear Susie. Magic. Homemade and practiced. You will be able to see traces of it in your cheeks and eyes from this day forward, a patina ...of going out of one's way to offer help when it means the difference between survival and starvation to someone who has nothing more than being to offer in return.

You're a fine person and an astute observer, and I always feel a little larger after these encounters with your handmade soul.

Ooh look who’s telling me about magic, homemade and practiced! I have a huge smile my dear friend, I am humbled and honoured repeatedly by your generosity but, and I feel quite certain in this, you have doubtless saved many more such feathered and furred creatures! I would like to think everyone, given the opportunity, would do the exact same? Is it not human to nurture the young and the helpless? I wonder, would shape and size, fur or feathers or nudity make not the slightest difference?

I adored those moments in the quiet and the dust Davey, I would repeat each of them tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow if I had to! I would likely get a call from the bank given the price of organic chicken breast here but what’s a little overdraft compared to a life!

I hope your weekend has held just the right amount of wonder my friend, I have spent far too many minutes of mine watching three young kestrels learn to fly, sadly with few photos to show for it but of the joy and smiles were worth so much more.

David E. Perry's avatar

"but what’s a little overdraft compared to a life!"

You are such a wise and generous soul. How dear is the world that set you spinning through it and then found ways to let us watch and learn ...and be reminded.

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Davey thank you, but would you mind forwarding that note to my bank manager? I am not certain he agrees… ;-)

David E. Perry's avatar

Of course. But perhaps better if you forward me her phone number so that I can read several of your reader's glowing comments aloud. Pretty sure she (or is it he?), has no idea of what a big deal you are in storytelling land.

Do you know? Does she speak any English?

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Oh you are an angel… 🥹 He, he is definitely a he, speaks only French with a heavy Marseille accent! I understand one in three words Davey, which is a great excuse when it comes to overspending!

I hope you are feeling better, foster mama owl :) And keep smiling!

Thank you dear one, I am smiling like a foster mama owl once more 🦉xx

How can such agonies elicit such poetry. A mystery I shall ponder - belatedly, apologies … the shiny distractions of Paris have thrown my reading schedule - your lyrical prose and astonishing observational skills transport this reader and make this writer question his own paltry offerings. Hoping the pain is abating. Congratulations on getting your owlet prepared for its next adventure.

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Absolutely no apologies necessary Barrie, Paris distractions are a very real and understandable excuse for tardiness in my opinion, especially when the meeting of friends are included within the visiting!

Hogwash I say... to your self questioning, paltry offerings indeed... is it not you that puts together wonderfully curious field notes every week? And "Little Butterfly" remember that little spark of brilliance! And you forget I read them and love them and share as many as I can so others can too.. You underestimate your literary shine but thank you for complimenting my own humble attempts... Have a fabulous Sunday!

What a gorgeous encouraging boost for a Sunday morning, Susie. Thank you, genuinely, for the lovely boosts! Always appreciated.

Completely worthy praise Barrie for you to remember when hesitant of ability!

Love your refreshing attitude to life Susie, that dentist trip sounded horrendous. But how you process things and open to life's beauty is a wonder, a gift.

So much soothe and comfort in how you live, how you see the world, Susie. (Never change!)

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Bless you dear Síodhna, thank you so much, I truly believe, in a world that seems so often designed to bring nothing but fear and grief and horror, holding tight to optimism, concentrating on all that is good, all that is beautiful and free is necessary for peace of mind, at least partially—brutal dentists not included!

May your weekend be kind beautiful soul. 💛

The Sea in Me's avatar

Yes those beautiful noticings, Susie, they seem to come without a cost. Its a way of being that we're drawn to. I sense it's a way of being whispered to the world. Maybe some of us here are part of that voice.

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

To be part of the voice is my one wish dear Síodhna... to share all that is beautiful to those that are less fortunate in their belief of peace, I believe you share such an important wish close to your own heart also. x

I always knew how special you are by the way you paint scenes with your heart. But after watching the deer, along with a full orchestra of friends—I do believe Mother Nature threw you a surprise party—“you know, don’t you, you just know!” I know I do. What other reason would the deer have to smile at you in a language you can understand. And the owlet photograph, would be lovely matted and framed. About that dentist visit: I immediately thought of this scene from the great classic, Marathon Man, with Dustin Hoffman and Sir Laurence Olivier. The dental tools are a bit different, but close enough. DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO BEFORE BED OR BEFORE GOING BACK TO THE DENTIST (I sincerely hope you immediately chose a new one). I did not take my own advice and watched this clip before bed. 😬

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Gahh, Lor, im blushing at your generosity, a huge hug of thanks is on its way!

The bird song and the deer, the owl in my lap while I watched—did you hear her talking to me too?—these were indeed a gift, a celebration even, of life? of the moment? whatever... it was a moment consigned to 'best memories ever'!

As for the dentist... he's out, sacked! I don't think I will ever pick up a screwdriver again without thinking of him, which is actually really bloody annoying but hopefully one day it will just be another funny story about a dentist epic—this is my third—they must see me coming! 😂

I can't play that link in this country apparently but I know the scene... "is it safe?" I'll not torture myself!

Dearest Susie... when your new post arrives in my inbox, I wait.. until I can be completely present. Until I have time to read slowly and savour your words and imagery. I don't think there is any other place on the internet this exquisite. It is a physical experience, reading your words. It is lush and calming and so beautifully sensory. When I start reading, I enter a quiet place, and I am enveloped in it.. and when I reach the close, I come out with a feeling as though I have been in meditation.

I don't know anyone who can write these things while simultaneously suffering the effects of a traumatic dental procedure.. you poor thing!! May each day bring you less pain and more beauty.

And may that little owl find its way in the world, having been so carefully nurtured by you. What a beautiful little creature. Thank you for sharing such an uplifting update.

Sending you love, beautiful you. Thank you for adding riches to my day. xo

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Jaime you are incredibly kind, what a beautiful comment to be given, a huge and deeply heartfelt thank you to you my lovely friend.

I have wondered, since that awful dental appointment, whether the gods were looking upon my kindly last week? Perhaps thinking, 'that poor girl, she needs something uplifting and wondrous to compensate for the horror of such an ordeal...' and although the owl had already appeared, the fact that she survived my clumsy administrations was never a given, the beautiful soft eyed deer under the window neither. I guess I will never know but I will be eternally grateful for them both at a time when I was feeling far from my best.

Sending love back to you as I sit healed and smiling once again at my desk watching a family of blue tits flitting from one head of elderflowers to another in the morning sun. X

Sumaya Abuhaidar's avatar

I loved this so much Susie. What a gift to hold side by side the pain and the wonder and to share both with us so honestly and beautifully. I hear you about the agonies of dental work, my friend! Is there ever anything more awful than a screwdriver in one’s mouth (whether flathead or philipp’s!!). And I also hear you about the owlet, the deer, the daily wonders of your hill. Hang in there through it all! ّI’m sending an especially big hug across the oceans❤️

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Dear Sumaya, thank you, I think perhaps we all have a dentist story to tell from somewhere in our lives but this is my third epic tale of woe from a dentists chair and truly, I pray it I my last! I will never hold a screwdriver again without remembering the sight of blood—mine—dripping from the end, a horror story!

But, compensation came in abundance... the owl, the deer, the hare which I have seen agin many times since, all of these and so much more are pockets of beauty given and designed to soothe aren't they?

I know you know beautiful one!

Sending love right back to you, may your day ahead be kind to you ♥️xx

Oh Susie! I live in dread of the dentist!! I hope that you have now fully recovered from your ordeal. I’m so delighted that your fluffy adoptee has flow the nest, healthy and I’m sure happy after your loving care. Your writing and photographs are divine, as always, I get lost in them every time you publish. The raindrops and the dust motes and the deer and the hare, just gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. Sending all my love xx

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Oh Em you too! I have had more than my fare share of horrific dental experiences in my life, one here in France, one in the UK and another in Ireland which leads me to conclude dentists are the same the world over! Enough said... except they terrify me too! I am recovered physically but I am uncertain if the memory will be healed as quickly!

Thank goodness for natures gifts to help with the healing... and I am certain I was given extra these last days to help compensate for another horrific dental ordeal. I am eternally grateful to the gods of nature for looking down on me with a sympathetic eye.

Thank you always beautiful, may your weekend be filled with wonder and kindness, sending love right back to you 💛xx

Dear Susie, I can, unfortunately, totally relate! Having recently had two implants drilled into my jaw by my dentist, then one of the screws came out again, after enduring 2 weeks of nightly pain and a swollen jaw, then having to have that rejected screw replaced by a new one... I can finally smile (and sleep!!) without pain again. The small blessings of life.

Your photo's in this post are just out of this world. And that hungry owlet sounds adorable.

much love to you and 'as melhoras' for your dental procedures xxx

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Dearest Veronika, I am so sorry you also have had a horror story to deal with. Thank goodness your dental agonies are behind you, as are mine... for the time being, I have yet to have a bridge fitted so am wondering what possible new painful epic that may produce while holding on to positivity with the thought that surely the worst is over!

A change of dentist is imminent though, if possible, they are like hens teeth—pun intended—here in the wilds of the Aveyron.

Thank you for kind words and thoughts, je suis ré-établie with much help from a small soft feathered friend! xxx

Ouch! Poor Susie. Thank you for the tiny jewels you share, they ease me into the day beautifully. How humble I feel just reading about your owlet, the trust of a wild thing, and to learn that it left, as it should, is wonderful. 💛

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

It is exactly that Michela, the trust placed in our hands is extraordinary and most certainly a gift to treasure in memory forever. Likewise the 'ouch' I think it may be time to change dentists!

Many thanks for stopping by, I just want to say again, how I loved your sketches of Edinburgh, truly you have inspired me immensely!

💛 With the luxury of being able to pop into a real art shop, I found this one—I think it is an Austrian brand. Highly recommended and owl grey! https://www.cretacolor.com/en/product/monolith-graphit-aqua/

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Oh my! Michela those look like pure luxury compared to what I have available here without driving two hours to a city! I have saved the page! Thank you... I ahem also sent it to my daughter who has a passion for aquarelle painting. xx

I know the feeling! I’ve found that Jacksons Art sell them online.

Jeffrey Streeter's avatar

The dentist sounds brutal. Get to a place of safety! But at least the incident has inspired some lyrical prose! I hope you feel better soon, Susie.

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Thank you Jeffrey, the whole epic is fading into the dimness of memories best forgotten and find a new dentist has been added to the top of my important 'things to do list'!

JoAnna's avatar

As always beautifully written, gorgeous photos -the little owlet😍-. Reading your stories is always a joy, Susie. But please, do find yourself another dentist! 😬

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

JoAnna, thank you my dear friend, I don’t think I’ve ever felt quite so relieved and sad all at once when she finally left… What a joy it was to have such a small miracle of life in my hands… 🥹

Sending love and wishes for a gentle week xx

JoAnna's avatar

The bittersweet feelings -like relief ánd sadness all at once- are the most profound, don’t you think? They last forever…🧡🦉

Oh Susie. 🫠 I once again saved this in my inbox for the 'right' uninterrupted moment to read because I HAVE to savour all that you write. It's like a balm for my soul. And so much to love and learn from. I am so refilled, even when you write about the lesser things of life such as literally being butchered by a dentist! Sorry,🫣 I did smile! My husband always seems to get that treatment too.

The continued story of the owlet brought tears of joy and, and, and more. The photos and beautiful video brought unspoken awe and told me to get out into MY world so much more. And then b.....y share it!

So all in all, as I read this at the beginning of yet another 'working' week AND a new month already, just as we are steeping into, (yes steeping ;)) stickiness again, thank you for the inspiration to love my life too!

OH and yes!!! I forgot to send the reply to you before! We have one red squirrel back again! One very pale red female who I 'think' or hope, may be pregnant coming to drink. We don't have grey squirrels here and there is so much food that we can only think it might be illness perhaps. We hope as the new pine cones all fatten up, then the 'families' will be back again. 🤞🏼 Have a lovely week Susie. 💚

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

Bless you Sally, I can commiserate with you husband entirely! In my life I have had three horrific tales to tell originating from a dentists chair—and subsequent agonies— each have been in a different country UK, Eire and here in France which leads me to conclude perhaps it takes a certain kind of character to become one, evidently it is worldwide! Enough said... I am recovered and relieved to be so.😅

As I said to Jaime above "I have wondered, since that awful dental appointment, whether the gods were looking upon my kindly last week? Perhaps thinking, 'that poor girl, she needs something uplifting and wondrous to compensate for the horror of such an ordeal...' and although the owl had already appeared, the fact that she survived my clumsy administrations was never a given, the beautiful soft eyed deer under the window neither. I guess I will never know but I will be eternally grateful for them both at a time when I was feeling far from my best." I believe they were!🙏🏼

The year is flying! We too had a week of 'summer-hot' weather, the fragile May leaves have begun to curl already and in places even started to fall but thankfully it was a short lived spell and rains have saved too much damage.

I haven't seen the little red squirrel again so I am praying no ill has befallen him🤞🏽I am delighted yours has returned Sally, these little creatures bring us so much joy don't they..!

Sending sunny hugs from my hill dear soul, have a beautiful weekend 💛xx

My dearest Susie, you know how to love. Even with an anasthesia-heavy smile, you beam love around the globe a million fold.

Susie Mawhinney's avatar

With much help from people like you and an owlet and a deer and my constant muse, the hare dear Kimberly, the work of beaming love, even with a lopsided smile is a pleasure I will never fail to be grateful for.

Sending love always xx

Thank you for reading Leah, I am delighted you enjoyed these journal notes. And yes, travelling to another town is most certainly on the cards next time I am in need!
